May is an exciting time on the French Riviera with multiple events taking place, each attracting a sophisticated and exclusive crowd from around the world. Here we take a look at the 4 most prestigious, ranging from international sport to film.
This year will be the 68th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which yet again promises to deliver two weeks of glamour, film and elegance. Since the 1930’s, stars and famous actors have gathered in the south of France to make an appearance on the red carpet and celebrate the film industry. There is an array of exclusive parties, fashion shows and movie showings, some accessible to all and some by VIP invitation only. This year’s eleven-day event starts on May the 13th, with the curtains closing on May the 24th.
The festival is divided in two sections: the Official Selection, awarding the prestigious Palme d’Or; and the Un Certain Regard, aimed at emerging talents and authors.
All of this is set to the backdrop of the charming town of Cannes. Stay in one of the exquisite five-star hotels, such as the world-renowned Hotel Majestic Barrière and simply step outside to wander down the Croisette, lined with luxurious boutiques and fine restaurants.
Cannes Film Festival yachts are another subject of attention: the most exclusive vessels afloat gather around Cannes and the Cap d’Antibes for the duration of the festival. Jetsetters embark on French Riviera yacht charter together with the movie elite to come to the trendy town for the glossy soirees, chic after-parties and movie screenings. In fact, yacht chartering during the festival has become a steady trend as elite vessels offer premium accommodation that sleeps a number of people with added benefits of being afloat at the price, which is similar or even lower than that of the high-end hotels on the Croisette.
Every spring the exclusive principality of Monaco plays host to the Formula 1 Grand Prix. This year the event runs from May the 21st to May the 24th and once again boasts an action packed schedule of events.
With its urban setting of tight corners and narrow streets, the race is widely regarded as the most thrilling on the event championship circuit. First organised in 1929, the organising association, as we know it today, started life as a bicycle club. It evolved, however, with the emergence of car use and growth in motorsports, and became the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM).
This is the time of the year when Monaco is at its most glamorous and luxurious. The event attracts a sophisticated, international crowd and is complimented with a plethora of social events, luxury parties and fashion shows. The sky over Monaco is buzzing with helicopters chartering guests and the sound of the elite cars is heard far outside of the race tracks as many visitors are hiring supercars or coming in their own ones to the Principality.
The fabulous Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc once again plays host to one of the world’s most successful events, amfAR. May the 21st 2015, will be the 22nd annual Cinema Against AIDS gala for the research foundation. To date the spectacular, star-studded event has raised more than $140 million for amfAR’s life-saving research programs and has ensured that the fight against AIDS, remains in the global media spotlight.
The event welcomes a host of faces from the world of film and fashion, which come together to raise awareness for the cause. Last year, Sharon Stone played auctioneer for the evening. Items up for auction included a trip to space with Leonardo DiCaprio, which sold for €900,000, and a Damien Hirst’s sculpture which went for €11 million. A fashion show was also held, with the world’s top models taking to the catwalk. Afterwards the entire collection was auctioned off for €3.5 million.
Auctions, fashion shows and music alike, make this glamorous fundraising event a highlight on many A-list calendars. Music this year will be presented by Mark Ronson, with a special performance from Mary J Blige amongst others. Tickets to the VIP event are some of the most coveted in town during the International Cannes Film Festival 2015.
Fashion and film go hand in hand, particularly at the Cannes Film Festival. Never before, however, has there been an event dedicated solely to fashion, putting it centre stage at the glamorous film festival. This year welcomes the debut of the Cannes Fashion Festival. The event will be held at the Salon Croisette in the Hôtel Majestic Barrière, from May 20th to 22nd.
The show will present the creations of exceptional international fashion designers and emerging talents to an audience of fashion lovers, media and industry insiders. The program of stunning runway shows and glamorous events will be live streamed online for a worldwide audience, with the aim of capturing every angle of the event as it happens.
Ms Laura Millet, Fashion Director of Cannes Fashion Festival said, “We are incredibly excited to announce the first ever Cannes Fashion Festival, and we have high hopes for it to become a staple on the international fashion calendar. The festival celebrates, applauds and encourages excellence in fashion, and we’re thrilled by the response from designers and fashionistas we’ve received so far.”
Four of the most glamorous events, held in two of the most exclusive destinations in the world in just one month. May promises to be a star-studded time on the beautiful French Riviera.
